Tantou returned before dawn and wakened them. They were into the Cerrillos Hills by afternoon. Clouds came and went over them, sparkling the landscape with brilliant moments of sunlight, then shrouding it in gloom.

Ascending a rise late in the day, they were able to glimpse Santa Fe in the distance. It seemed a magical, golden place in the glowing light of sunlight, a city in a fairy tale.

Harry hoped Isabel would be cheered by the sight, but her melancholy did not leave her. Then, all at once she smiled, spurring her horse.

There was a rider coming their way. As he drew nearer, Harry saw that it was a well-dressed Mexican, astride another magnificent horse. He was an older man, a trifle portly.

“Anselmo!” she cried.

Approaching Isabel, he removed his hat with a sweep.

“Senorita Almaden,” he said, returning the sombrero to his head. “It is good to see you well. I was expecting not to find you for many days.”

“Why are you trying to find me?” she asked. “You were asked to return home.”

“And so I did, Isabelita.” He looked away. There was something more he wanted to say.

Or did not want to.

The man glanced questioningly at Harry.

“This is the man we’ve been waiting for,” she said. “A Union man, from the East.”

Anselmo nodded, then turned his attention very directly to Isabel. “I have bad news. Very bad news.”

“Something has gone wrong?” she asked.

“Your father is dead, Isabelita. He has been murdered.”

Harry expected tears, a shriek, anger, or, as he might from the Southern ladies among whom he’d been brought up, fainting. Instead, her eyes went from the man Anselmo to the city waiting on the horizon. She furrowed her brow, then struck her horse with a vicious slap of reins to the flank and tore off down the road at a full, mad gallop.
